Alexandrite is the birthstone for the month of June (along with the moonstone and pearl) and the Anniversary stone for the 55th year of marriage. It is also considered Friday's stone, or the stone of "Friday's Child." It is an extremely rare gemstone and a fairly modern one to boot. It does not share the ancient history and lore of most other gems due to the fact that it was first discovered in the 19th Century. Often described as an "emerald by day and ruby by night," alexandrite displays a dramatic chameleon-like color shift depending on the light source.

Described as "emerald by day, ruby by night,” alexandrite is the very rare color-change variety of the mineral chrysoberyl. Alexandrite birthstones show a vivid green to bluish green in daylight or fluorescent light, and an intense red to purplish red in incandescent light.
